Foam Mattress is considered to be one of the most comfortable items used for relaxation purposes. These types of mattresses,  are made accordingly to give comfort and coziness to the person who is using it for sitting, sleeping or even relaxing. 

The mattresses are easily stretchable and hence are known as visco-elastic mattresses as well. Originating in the labs of NASA, they were previously known as LPR or low-resilience polyurethane foam mattresses. They were not allowed for the public use back in the 1970s. They were actually used in space shuttles. It was not until the fall of the 90s when these mattresses became the hottest item in the market. Foam Mattress – know the quality

Quality is often a decisive factor when it comes to choosing a Foam Mattress. Most of the foam mattresses are made by using three layers of foam with the top layer known as the topper and the bottom layer known as the foundation layer. In almost all of the cases, the quality is determined by the firmness of the mattress, the IFD or the indentation force deflection rating and the density. 



Firmness determines if the mattress is hard or soft. Hard mattresses are pressure dependent and only adjust in shape when body pressure is applied. Superior quality foams are heat sensitive, and they soften with the application of the slightest of body heat. Density determines the quality of foam used. Cheaper mattresses are often characterized by a foam density of 2 to 3 lbs where as superior quality mattresses often have a density of 5 to 6 lbs.

There are several hazards associated with a Foam Mattress as well. If you have asthma tendency, or if you are prone to allergies then these mattresses are a strict “no-no” for you! These mattresses are highly combustible due to the application of combustible chemicals along with polyurethane foam. They are highly sensitive to excessive hot or cold water as well. Maintaining foam mattresses is a real tough business to handle. Immense care is needed to be taken for the maintenance purposes. Do not apply hot or cold water in excess as this may damage the material. Do not put them into your washing machine for washing and drying. The whole thing may come back in shreds. Drop your idea of drying with a drier as they are highly sensitive to heat. Remove dust and stains from a Foam Mattress using detergent, water sprays and vacuum cleaners only!
